Scorpion 3D Stinger – Picking Pipes from a Bin

We are proud to present for the first time a complete 3D simulation of picking pipes from a bin.

Pipe Picking Application Areas

The Scorpion 3D Stinger technology has an application area potential in Automotive,  3D Robot Vision, Security, Maritime Industry,  Fish Farming and Oil & Gas.

The pipe location feature capability can be adapted for picking pipes both in a factory and outdoor environment.

Simulation System Description

The simulated system is based on the Scorpion 3D Stinger Camera including a multiple laser line used as structured light element. The system has the following impressive features:

  • Full 3D without a 3D Scanner
    • fast robust and reliable in real-time 
      • capture and processing from 100 millisecond
  • The 3D images used is generated based on a standard 3D model
    • With Scorpion 3D Stinger we can evaluate and develope complete 3D machine vision solutions based on the part’s 3D model. This leads to lower cost and decreasing deployment time.
    • The simulation describes the complete process from 2D and 3D calibration to simulation of a complete picking sequence.
    • Scorpion 3D Stinger locates the pipes with sub-pixel accuracy

The 3D Robot Vision Scenario

The Scorpion 3D Stinger camera is mounted above the bin with pipes.

The pipes are placed in a bin with size 500 x 800 mm. The pixel resolution is approximately 0.8 mm.

The animation shows a complete simulation of a 3D bin picking system

The animation shows the following:

  • The pipe being picked in sequence
  • There are four layers of pipes at 103, 215, 330,450 mm
  • The top layer pipes are counted
  • The 3D model is generated by the Scorpion 3D Stinger software based on the laser lines.
  • The 3D model in the animation provides the basis for counting pipes and locating the selected pipe  in 3D with six degrees of freedom
