Making it Easy – STC-0028-PointExtrema

With Scorpion Tool Components we strive to make it easy. The STC-0028-PointExtrema calculates the extremal point based on three or more points. This is needed to perform sub-pixel width measurement in the sample below.

The challenge: To locate the outer-most points – to measure the maximum width – a good way to do this is to estimate it from a sequence of edgepoints

How we solve to locate the outer-most points:

Locate the six objects with TemplateFinder3
Locate edge points with SingleLineFinder
Use STC-0028-PointExtrema to estimate the outer-most point

Scorpion Vision in R&D – Syringe Fill Level Measurement

This is an update on the development work being done by Denis Lebel of Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal based on Scorpion Premium 3D.

As you will see at the following YouTube link, the application is to read the fill level on the syringes… first acting like an error proof double check to the pharmacy’s technician’s (preparing syringes for use in the hospital and in oncology) and second to get an even more precision reading on the syringe’s dosage.

Precision’s are excellent at sub-milli-liter reading !

In the case of oncology drugs, cancer fighting drugs, precise measurements are extremely important since a slight over-dosage can kill the patient instead of helping the patient ! There have been reports of patients being over-dosaged by a factor of 10X and dying !!

The syringe bodies are covered to hide the syringe tip and the measurement is done by reading the piston’s outward distance from the finger grip area of the syringe.

Adapting to Windows-7 and especially 64-bit is quite a process primarily due to driver support but times are slowly changing to the better. With Scorpion 9.2 we can now report the following verified status:

Complete firewire support for Windows-7 32 and 64 bit
- Unibrain’s generic ubCore driver support all firewire camera through Scorpion Firegrab camera driver
- Allied Vision Firewire camera is extended with low-level register access and Windows-7 32 and 64 bit support
AVT Prosilica GigE driver has been used for a long time with 64 bit
Scorpion Vision supports the Advantech Bionic API with complete Windows-7 support which makes all Advantech io-modules available under 32 and 64 bit.
- The ethernet adam-60xx modules are supported on both 32and 64-bit through standard tcp/ip connectivity
Scorpion Vision 9.2 is also running smoothly both on 32 bit and 64 bit Windows
- The screen shot below shows a very extensive and advanced 3D Robot Inspection system capturing 34 images and doing more than 200 inspections
- This Scorpion Profile consumes 2.5 GByte memory. It runs very nicely with headroom on Windows-7 64 bit
  - There is still more than 1 GByte free on a system with 4GByte
    - on 32 bit this would be very tight even with a 3GByte switch enabled.

Summary:

It is time to consider Windows-7 64-bit as your operating system platform!
- If you need more memory for demanding 3D applications this might be a must.
Scorpion Vision will continue to support Windows XP, XPembedded, Windows-7 32 and 64 bit for a long time!
With Scorpion Vision you can select your platform based on your own requirements.

Note 1:

Camera drivers not mentioned will most probably work with 64 bit – check with the specific camera vendor.
Basler promises full support for 32 bit and 64 bit with Pylon 2.3

Note 2:

To verify stable camera and io
- drivers are always important independant of operating system
- they have to be tested and verified to be able to guarantee stable operation

The fine surface classification is being used for new machine vision areas. The screen shot below is from a system that sorts granite into Class 1, Class 2 or Reject. The system is working together with a robot to implement a complete solution.

Structured Light System Inspects Ski Surfaces – Vision Systems Design

Madshus enlisted Tordivel to develop a laser-based profiling system that computes the surface detail of the base of each ski as they move along a conveyor at 250 mm/s (see Fig. 1). Due to the nature of the base grinding process, any defects will appear in a longitudinal direction along the ski. To detect defects as small as 0.02 mm in depth and 2 mm in length, the Tordivel system illuminates each ski as it passes along a conveyor with a structured laser light unit from Coherent.

Embedded in Tordivel’s Scorpion 3D Stinger camera system, this structured light source illuminates the transverse section of the ski with three structured laser lines. Reflected light from these lasers is then imaged using a 640 × 480-pixel V60 GigE camera from Sony that is also embedded in the Scorpion 3D Stinger. Placed 250 mm under the conveyor, the 3-D camera system captures images at 90 frames/s and transfers them over the GigE camera’s interface for real-time processing.

I believe that the components technologies and methods for reuse will have a significant impact on our ability to implement better and more advanced 3D Machine Vision solutions togheter with our customers.

We continue to create great value for our 2D and 3D machine vision customers.

The first Scorpion Vision version 9.2 is made publically available today! A great feature is that the improved installer automatically inform the user of an Scorpion Vision update – this will keep your Scorpion Vision setup up-to-date.

We call it the STC – Scorpion Tool Components – release. With Scorpion Tool Components we can add tools and image processing to an existing Scorpion Vision release using the Scorpion itself. This is a radical shift in our ability to tailor functionality in every Scorpion Vision application.

The powerful Data Input pages have a significant face-lift. Making it even easier to make user configuration pages without any programming. This important feature is now exposed in BaseTool and Toolboxes. Toolboxes can now copied from system to system – this boosts the reuse of Scorpion image processingin real world systems.
