Is the box Empty? – A perfect solution using the Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera

Introduction

I have been working with Robot Vision for more than ten years. In the beginning we were happy when the could pick at all and the robot did not crash too often :) When picking from boxes and pallets the there is always a last challenge to know that the layer or box is empty before you move it away – if you are wrong it hits hard when the robot moves non-empty box.

Scorpion 3D Stinger Starter KitScorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera

Our innovative and new solution is the Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera. The system consists of the following standard elements:

  • Scorpion Vision 3D Empty App
  • Compact PC running Scorpion Version X
  • Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera

The Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera is a combined with a 10 mW or 100 mW multiline laser that is projected onto the pallet or into the box.

Locate moving objects in 3D

The technology is not limited to robotics – the challenge also exists in all kind of box moving application where everything stops when the box or conveyor is not empty.

Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser is able to operate with superior performance based on the following features:

  • Packaged in the Scorpion 3D Stinger Camera
    • Using stereo vision to locate the laserlines
  • Automatic and Accurate One Push 3D Calibration
  • Robust sub-pixel 2D location of laser lines
Empty Laser Image

The image shows an plane surface illuminated with 15 laser lines – the surface does not reflect the red laser very well

Locate laserlines FindPaths2D

The laser traces / paths are located with the Scorpion Tool Component FindPaths2D even with low contrast. Note that the outermost laserlines are not straight

  • Create a 3D Image in Real-time
    • The Scorpion Tool Components LocatePaths3D has significant features to handle missing laser points and folding challenges.
    • The sample shows a point cloud of 4489 points that is generated in 165 ms
Empty_3DImage

The most accurate 3D image is created – the rms value for the 4889 3D points is 0.29 mm – given a 2D pixel resolution of 0.62 mm

The Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera is created to solve demanding applications in robotics and automation. It has a long list of features that make a difference in mission-crtitical applications. The 3D technology is available to OEMs and System Integrators.

Used to solve challenging 3D Bin Picking

YouTube ButtonWe have used the Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera to solve an innovative 3D Bin Picking solution for dog food packaging using an ABB robot.

With a fast vision cycle time of less  than 500 ms a robust strategy must be developed. The empty check is critical for 100% reliable operation because the robot must empty the bin before moving the box away.

The animation shows the the two stereo-vision cameras, the 3D Model and the corresponding height map. There are images showing one item, two items and empty.

The box is verified 100% empty

FASTlab FDG phosphate cassette manufacturing…key to our future…do you want to know more?

YouTube is a great source of information – check these videos!

Did you know that the cassette and also the vials for the cassette are manufactured under cGMP? Did you know that several specially designed machines and robots are used in the manufacturing process?

Dennis Røller from GE Healthcare Pharmaceutical Pilot Plant, PET Supply Chain, Oslo, has made a brief movie on how the FDG phosphate cassettes actually are manufactured, step-by-step by the highly competent team in Oslo….

The movie gives an overview of the many different aspects of vial and cassette production, such as

  • PET vial filling performed in Pharmaceutical Pilot Plant with a specially designed filling machine
  • Quality Control of vials
  • FASTlab FDG phosphate cassette assembly in Oslo Plant, with the use of a semi-automated assembly machine
  • Quality control of cassettes, including visual control with an automated vision inspection robot
  • Packing of cassettes
  • QA release

Scorpion 3D Stinger for Robot Vision

Scorpion 3D Stinger for Robot Vision

Together with our excellent automation partner Dynatec from Askim, Norway we have developed an innovative 3D Bin Picking solution for dog food packaging using an ABB robot.

The cycle time of the system is less than 2 seconds leaving less than a 500 ms for 2D and 3D image processing. This requirement called for an innovative approach using the new Scorpion 3D Stinger Camera that locates moving objects in real-time in 3D.

The video shows the 3D Bin Picking solution in operation picking the smallest sausage. The system handles three different sausage sizes.

The pace is fast – the sausage is rolling and moving while picking – the system handles this with ease.

Scorpion 3D Stinger for Robot Vision

We designed a solution based on our latest 3D technology and Scorpion Vision Software Version X. The Scorpion 3D Stinger for Robot Vision was implemented using a Scorpion Industrial PC and a Scorpion 3D Stinger MLaser Camera.

This solution adds the speed and accuracy by extracting 3D data from 2D images in addition to using structured light. This creates contrast on the sausages making it possible to use a 3D Cylinder fit to locate the dog food with the required robustness.

3D Cylinder Model

Each dog sausage is located based on structured light and a fast and reliable 3D Cylinder Fit

The system is very fast and reliable due to the unique Scorpion 3D Stinger concept  ”Extracting 3D from 2D images”. The 3D technology is proven and is ready to be used in applications in many industries.

Version X creates solution with Sick 3D Cameras

We are pleased to present image from an innovative and new Scorpion Version X 3D scanning product from HDS Group.

The technological aspect of the system is two sided 3D Scanner using two Sick E-50 Ranger cameras with Scorpion Version X.

The process is as follows :

  • Mount 2 pc Sick E-50 Ranger Cameras
  • Capture two 3D points cloud from the ranger cameras
  • Merge the two images in Scorpion Vision using a new Python 3D API
  • Locate the object in 3D and process the point cloud

Step 1 : Capture 2 3D Images

Two sided 3D scanning with Scorpion 3D Scanner

Step 2 : Merge the two points clouds with high precision

Step 3 : Display the result of the processed block
