Version X supports OpenCV 2.4.3

Scorpion Vision Version X supports OpenCV 2.4.3 which was released the 2nd of November. We plan to follow OpenCV, Numpy and Scipy because these libraries are important to anyone. We want Scorpion Vision to be the best way to integrate these libraries through Python. We are are a proud user of Python since 2001 when we included it in Scorpion Vision version 2.0.

In the Scorpion Vision Software Version X build 533 we have added a nice profile that shows how we can access all the samples and the most of the OpenCV code directly from python and Scorpion Vision. Below a screenshot using Windows-8 :) and Scorpion Version X.

The OpenCV samples are accessible with a mouse click

Below the kmeans clustering is shown.

Version X supports Automatic Calibration for Scorpion 3D SmartCam

Scorpion Vision Version X provides Scorpion Tool Components and an upgraded 3D Calibration tool component that makes it easy to make auto calibration support in 3D machine vision applications. Using a 3D reference object see below will establish a common 3D reference system for multiple cameras automatically – this will ensure the integrity of your 3D machine vision system. The new STC-0062-RefObjCalibration3D defines the dimension of any custom reference object.

The software defines any 3D calibration objects and locates the 3D reference points with sub-pixel accuracy providing the best 3D calibration automatically

Automatically verify the status of your calibration.

The new STC-0063 ValidateExtReferences3D will validate the calibration of all the connected cameras and ensure that calibration is consistent.

One Push Calibration Dialog

The one push button is available if you want the operator to decide when to do the calibration. The status fields exposes the RMS value in mm for all 3D cameras – the Z distance from the camera to the calibration object and the actual number of points used on the reference object. If all values are ok the 3D Calibration OK is green and the system is fine :)

Easy filtering with STC-0011-OpenCVFilter

OpenCV – a great source of inspiration

At Scorpion Vision we feel inspired by the OpenCV Open-Source project – it must be followed and analysed by a dedicated machine vision company. All the excellent 2D filters that are included in OpenCV  has opened up our understanding of the importance of extracting /removing / enhancing an image before doing the image analysis on the images. The STC-0011-OpenCVFilter is created in this good athmosphere and underline the fact that Scorpion Vision Software is an open platform where we can pick and choose from the best available algorithms or choose to make a custom solution.

STC-0011-OpenCVFilter provides easy access to OpenCV filtering

We have implemented this powerful and flexible tool that exposes the following filters in its FilterBank with 20 odd operators.

  • Canny
  • Laplace
  • Blur
  • Make Border
  • Histogram Equalize
  • Pre Corner Detect
  • Invert 8 bit image
  • Median Blur
  • Erode
  • Dilate
  • Open
  • Close
  • Adaptive Threshold
  • Scale
  • Trunc
  • Gaussian Blur
  • Flip

Robust LineFit3D with STC-0038

When working in 3D – basic operations like line, plane and cylinder fitters are extremely important functions. Based on Scorpion Vision unique component technology we have upgraded the STC-0038-FitLine3D with the option to do a very robust 3D line fit.

Configuration Screen for STC-0038-FitLine3D

Works both in 2D Images or in 3D Points Cloud

The sample is a 3D stereo vision system where we show how you can pick pipes from a storage.

The pipes are located in 3D with Scorpion 3D Stinger technology

Standard LineFit3D with OpenCV algorithm

We do a linefit using the eight 3D points that are the center of the pipes using the OpenCV algorithm.

The OpenCV algorithms uses all points to create the 3D Line

Robust 3D Line Fit – Theil Sen Algorithm

The robust line fit evaluate the incoming 3D points and based on a median fit assumptions it removes the outliers – in this sample it concludes the three upper points is not part of the line – which is a good conclusion.

The robust line fit treats the three upper pipes as outliers – the longest / best lines in the points of the lower pipe row. The yellow points shows the incoming points

Conclusion

The Theil Sen algorithm for line fit is a good addition to the reliable 3D tools of Scorpion Vision Software. The robust median will help remove up 29.3% of the outliers and still make a good estimate. This feature will help make applications reliable. It also helps us to be significant better than OpenCV which is a requirement for us :)

The 3D fitted line in the Scorpion 3D View

There is also a 2D version of this algorithm implemented as a Scorpion Tool Component – STC-0040 FitLine2D. This component can be used to locate a line in a noisy environment.
